Renewal communications are confusing (EDU, OSS)
I received the following 2 e-mails from GitLab:
Hello Lee,
As a reminder, your GitLab subscription A-S000XXXXX expires on 11/25/2023. If your subscription is set to auto-renew,
If you would like to continue your subscription, you don’t need to take any action
If you would like to cancel auto-renew, login to the GitLab customer portal anytime up to thirty (30) days before renewal to cancel.
If your subscription is not set to auto-renew, you can renew it manually by logging into our Customer Portal within 15 days of your renewal date (11/25/2023) or contact our sales team for additional assistance.
Need help?
Check out our docs for SaaS and Self-managed subscriptions
If you are a self-managed customer, you will need to activate your GitLab instance with a Cloud License activation code going forward, which requires GitLab version 14.1 or above. Learn more on how to activate your instance with an activation code or how to upgrade your instance.

Hello Lee,
As your GitLab subscription A-S000XXXXX is approaching renewal on 11/25/2023, we want to make you aware of changes to your renewal process to improve your renewal experience. These changes are not applicable to users of our community programs.
We announced improvements to the billing and subscription management experience for customers that will help to simplify subscription management. These changes include:
For SaaS and self-managed customers, transition from annual true-ups to quarterly subscription reconciliation
For self-managed customers - improved subscription management with cloud licensing and automated renewals
How to access these benefits:
You can continue to renew/manage your subscription in the GitLab Customer Portal.
If you are a self-managed customer, you will need to activate your GitLab instance with a Cloud License activation code going forward, which requires GitLab version 14.1 or above. Learn more on how to activate your instance with an activation code or how to upgrade your instance.
If you require further clarifications, please refer to the Customer FAQs or contact GitLab Support.

- One of these e-mails contains an
if
which I don't know the answer to (or how/where to find the answer to):If your subscription is set to auto-renew
. - The other e-mail explicitly calls out:
These changes are not applicable to users of our community programs
.
You know that information and could use it to dynamically build the e-mail content (or in the case of the second e-mail, not send it at all).
- Where can I find out out if my subscription is set to auto-renew?
- I tried to renew but need a coupon code. When/where can I get this?
Thanks
