Feedback on Japanese translations rendering from translated markdown

Several Unicode and markdown rendering issues have been identified with JA translations. Sharing verbatim as separate threads 🧵

Examples of unicode usage in the docs:

  • Backticks `: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/blob/master/doc/user/rich_text_editor.md#L81
  • Backslash \: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/blob/master/doc/api/graphql/getting_started.md#L63
  • Pipe character |: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/blob/master/doc/user/search/advanced_search.md#L61
  • Square brackets [ ]: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/blob/master/doc/user/shortcuts.md#L62-63

These are required to ensure there are no rendering issues, either on docs.gitlab.com itself, or sometimes in GitLab itself when rendered from /help. We might be able to remove some of these, there's a chance that:

  • If they were specifically for the nanoc site, Hugo might be OK with them now.
  • They might never have been needed.

But it's likely we'll still need to support unicode in general. The unicode strings should remain as unicode and not be converted to the ascii characters themselves.
