Discussion: Process change to create maintenance incidents for change requests

As our incident response process has become more defined, we have an opportunity to extend this process to support our existing change request (CR) process, though the usage of incidents to capture our tasks executed as planned maintenance.

For planned maintenance this allows us to be prepared for if our changes do not go as planned, and provide a central place for response and coordination of related efforts. This also allows us to capture the impact of planned changes by merging related incidents.

If we do encounter issues during the execution of a CR that causes paging alerts we can capture these through merging incidents into the in-progress incident.

Proposal

  • Define maintenance incident type
  • Add creating a maintenance incident to the Change Request process
