Platform / Infrastructure Office Hours

In a discussion with @cchiappe @fzimmer and @jeffersonj, the topic of where the best place to engage with Infrastructure/Platform/SRE folks at GitLab is.

This made me wonder if it would make sense to start a regular Platform and/or Infrastructure Office Hours.

Proposal

  1. A monthly meeting (eg, 1st Tuesday of the month)
  2. US/Euro friendly timezone, or alternatively US/Euro alternating with APAC/Euro
  3. Volunteer Hosts - I would be happy to volunteer but other hosts are welcome too
  4. Ideally public and posted on GitLab Unfiltered. Note that there may be questions from CS folk, but we'll need to ensure that customer names are not mentioned.
  5. Examples of target audience and sample topics
    1. CS/Support: Best practices for monitoring GitLab instances, based on what we've learned running GitLab.com and GitLab Dedicated.
    2. CS/Support: Kubernete/Chef questions
    3. CS/Support: how customers can use Structured Logging to understand whats happening in their instances
    4. CS/Support: deep dives into Postgres metrics to understand the performance of a GitLab Instance
    5. CS/Support: correlating logs from Postgres to HAProxy and everything inbetween
    6. Development: best practices for developing against Redis
    7. Development: how to understand continuous profiles
    8. Development: what to expect when kicking off a production readiness procedure
    9. Product: how do Infrastructure use GitLab Templates to standardise policies and builds across projects?
    10. Product: how have Infrastructure automated dependency upgrades using Renovate?
