Research possibility of creating/using sre-oncall group within GitLab
We built: https://ops.gitlab.net/gitlab-com/gl-infra/sre-oncall-usergroup-updater -- which allows us to @ mention @sre-oncall
in Slack and it sends a notification to the current oncall (based on PagerDuty). The team has expressed that it has been pretty useful and has been using it.
Taking this solution one step further, there is an interest to see if we can implement something similar so that we can @ mention @sre-oncall
in issues/MRs and have that send notification to the current oncall. Original interest expressed from Andrew: https://gitlab.slack.com/archives/CB3LSMEJV/p1579774421235000
Conversations from the thread:
- Would it be possible to make a SRE-Oncall group for GitLab and ops.gitlab.net, in the same (most awesome) way you’ve done for Slack? That way we could cc @ sre-oncall from issues too
- ... we could also use sre-oncall to the mandatory list of approvers for configuration changes
- ... though I’m not sure how that works when group membership changes while an MR is open
