Post-deployment Patch (hotpatch) Firedrill
Hot Patching is a way to quickly deploy patch files to our production environment. It was created when we were primarily running in VMs and installing the Omnibus package across the fleet. This meant that it was very difficult for us to build and deploy a change quickly. We currently are in the process of moving most of our fleet to Kubernetes, once we finish the remaining fleets this process will likely go away, see &112 (closed) for more information about the migration to Kubernetes.
Where applying hot-patches to infrastructure used to be a bi-monthly occurrence it happens much less frequently now due to our ability to deploy faster and more often. For this reason we would like to run a regular demonstration of the patching process so team members are familiar with it and we can ensure that our docs are up-to-date and our tooling works as expected.
