TeamOps Practitioner Program Introduction
TeamOps Objectives
TeamOps is an operations model that helps teams maximize productivity, flexibility, and autonomy by managing decisions, information, and tasks more efficiently. The internal objectives for articulating and distributing the TeamOps philosophy are:
- Systemize and explain the ways of working that are unique to GitLab for company-wide awareness and standardization
- Create a repeatable operational model that other organizations can apply to increase workforce productivity, flexibility, and autonomy
Learner Profile
A TeamOps Level 1 Practitioner is an internal GitLab employee who is responsible for cultural training and/or brand representation to colleagues and industry groups, such as members of the following teams and departments:
- Operations / Chief of Staff team
- Learning and Development
- Onboarding managers
- Public Relations, Communications, and Marketing
- PR list of approved speakers
- Department heads and managers
Pilot Objectives
The purpose of the first version of this certification program (launching FY23-Q4) is to collect critical feedback and resources as part of a larger go to market strategy, including:
- Focus Group – Content testing, feedback, and iteration as beta test before TeamOps is released to public market with more aggressive sales strategy.
- Content/Model Prototyping – Test the viability of creating a network of TeamOps representatives for future phases of TeamOps growth. (“Train the Trainer”)
- Content Creation – Scale content related to TeamOps by empowering all of GitLab to contribute blog posts and social threads.
Learning Objectives & Outcomes
In both internal and external conversations, GitLab Practitioners will be able to clearly explain (and advocate for) the difference between GitLab’s operational model (TeamOps) and traditional operational models. Through their participation in this workshop, learners will:
- Learn about the following topics:
- History and Evolution of TeamOps
- TeamOps Philosophy, Model, and Criteria
- Impacts and Repeatable Results of TeamOps
- Future of TeamOps
- TeamOps Practitioner Responsibilities and Resources
- Collaborate with other learners to discuss:
- TeamOps Glossary and Key Takeaways
- Potential Barriers to Understanding and/or Successful Application of the TeamOps Model
- Produce original educational resources to exercise practitioner skills and teach future learners
- Prove original expertise by answering spontaneous questions about TeamOps in a live, virtual interview
- Provide feedback about how to optimize the TeamOps model, and the Practitioner certification experience
Learning Experience
The Level 1 Practitioner Certification Program (Pilot, Level 1) will comprise a variety of synchronous and asynchronous learning activities.
- Complete the TeamOps course in LevelUp
- Attend a live 4-hour virtual workshop for discussion and collaboration with other learners
- Create original educational materials on a micro-topic about TeamOps, including:
- 1 3-minute “talking head” or narrated presentation video
- 1 article (500-1000 words)
- Complete a 45-minute interview with TeamOps leadership
- Provide feedback on both TeamOps content and the learning experience

🎯 OKR
This issue support the TeamOps FY23-Q4 OKR, which is to certify at least 100 GitLab team members and 1 person in each department as TeamOps Trainer: Level 1
Requirements for TeamOps Trainer: Level 1
- Complete the TeamOps practitioner program (Train the Trainer Workshop)
- Be able to answer questions about TeamOps (interview by existing trainer)
- Enthusiastic presentation of about 3-5 minutes on advantages of TeamOps on YouTube (GitLab Unfiltered)
- Contribute proposals to the materials (3 MRs including one graphic) on iterating TeamOps content to be market-ready
- One blog post (or similar) published on GitLab, LinkedIn, Medium, Twitter thread, etc.
