Rename Create:Editor to reflect new focus
Goal
Rename the ~"group::editor" to something more reflective of the current categories and features supported by the group.
Proposal
Rename Create:Editor to Create:IDE.
The mapping would look like:
- Group: IDE
- Categories: Remote Development, Web IDE
- Non-category features: GitLab Workflow

Justification
The IDE group is focused on the GitLab Web IDE, Remote Development workspaces, and the GitLab Workflow Extension for VS Code. Each of these features primarily serves the developer persona and is focused on improving the developer experience around authoring code in either a desktop or remote environment.
What other options were considered?
-
Code
- This has too much overlap with Source Code and Code Review and is ambiguous about what we want you to be able to do with the code. -
Develop
- My previous favorite for its brevity. A bit generic, as many categories outside of the group also serve a development task. Also repetitive withDev
as a section. -
Remote Development
- While Workspaces/remote development is a major aspect of the solution, the Web IDE and VS Code Extension are very explicitly not remote development tools. The Web IDE runs entirely in the local browser and the extension is installed on the desktop IDE. Remote Development is also currently the category name we use and could introduce confusion if we promote it to the group name. -
Developer Tools
- Too broad, as the CLI and other tools are outside the scope of this group Dev Environment
-
Dev Workspace
- Could be a strong alternative name Code Authoring
-
Code Editing
- Same ambiguity issues asDevelop
but also doesn't roll off the tongue.
