@jreporter I was unable to attend the sync today but I'm on board with this action. This is a SUPER way to create internal clarity and alignment to our recently created PM responsibilities page as SSOT. I will be very interested to see if this internal survey surfaces anything we've not currently captured and want to add.
Hi @jreporter - Love the survey. One minor suggestion/question. I thought -historically -that EMs are responsible for engineering team health. Should we simply say the team-health -or quad health or quad +infra+security?
Do you want to be allowing folks to complete the survey without answering all the questions? Because right now they can... or maybe that's because it's a preview and not the actual survey. In a brief multiple choice like this survey, I'd suggested making them answer them all before being able to submit but your call!
As long as you have their attention, consider adding a final question that says do you have any other thoughts or something similar with an open response field. Interesting feedback may come through. Something like:
"Are there any other skills you think Gitlab PMs are really great at or could use improvement in that are not mentioned in this survey? Feel free to share your thoughts here: _______________ "
Answering the open response should not be required in the survey logic, if you decide to go that route with the multi choice.
The survey looks great, some other expectations (maybe be false or true)/responsibilities I observe people expect out of PM, and I think would be great if we can get some clarity from the survey:
PM are the voice of customers and translate customer needs & pain points into product features and designs
PM are responsible for driving cross-functional collaboration and alignment
PM are owners of the KPI and OKRs for their cross-functional squad
PM set up strategy for their product area in alignment with company strategy

Out of the 63 sent surveys we received 28 completed responses
All 15 attributes averaged a Strongly agree to Somewhat agree for Product Manager responsibilities; although, some had a very large variance in the responses.
There were four areas that had a low variance indicating high agreement "Product Managers are responsible for scheduling features, bugs, and issues at GitLab", "Product Managers are external spokespersons for GitLab." and "Product Managers are advisers prospect and customer calls to advise on feature direction or use case to assist in deals.", "Product Managers conduct business cases and competitive analysis for evaluating new opportunities."
The most universally agreed-upon responsibility (lowest variance, std deviation in responses of 0.42) is that the respondents Strongly Agreed "Product Managers create the strategy for their product area in alignment with company strategy"
Many of the respondents Somewhat Agreed that "Product Managers are responsible for driving cross-functional collaboration and alignment"
The most controversial responsibilities with the highest variances and largest standard deviations were "Product Managers are technical domain experts and thought leaders.", "Product Managers guide the design and development process at GitLab.", "Product Managers are accountable for accomplishing business results.", "Product Managers are responsible for product group (quad) team health."
Given the everything is either a "strong" or "somewhat" agree, I think a learning from here is that ordering the various questions by priority or distributing a given amount of "votes" might provide more useful answers when we ask counterparts who are likely open to our support and cooperation.
@nagyv-gitlab - not everything is Strong or somewhat agree, some questions had a very large variance as noted in point 6. Or do you mean for the ones that were strong/ somewhat?
@jreporter I based that learning on the first point
