Navigation Changes Process & Testing Decisions
Overview
It took over 4 months to get a decision on where to add Component Catalog to the product. There is not clarity on the process on how Navigation DRIs make the decisions and what criteria are required to add to the left navigation.
Goals
- There is lack of clarity on what to expect going into a navigation approval.
- Prepare the product manager and their team to know what is coming and what is expected so they can make a successful proposal.
- Note, timelines could also a part of this confusion and were added in another MR.
Proposal
Establish a process building on https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/product/ux/navigation/ by which decisions are made and criteria that must be satisfied to add to the left navigation.

The Product Manager for Foundations must approve any proposal as the DRI. They will consult with UX counterparts to consider the impact on the user experience based on user research and business needs. UX and Product Management leadership may also be engaged for feedback when necessary.
