Panel inclusion search for batch genes feature
It is routine for users of PanelApp to determine which panels a particular gene is included in. This can currently be done one at a time by clicking on the "Genes and Entities" button, finding the relevant gene, clicking on it and observing all the panels that gene is included in. Often there are multiple genes that need to be reviewed in this manner and it is time consuming and difficult to view this information in the context of a batch of genes that relates to a particular patient.
A new feature is therefore proposed that would allow a user to input a batch of gene symbols and then search for all the panels each of these genes were included in. The way the results could then be displayed could be done multiple ways but one approach might be to use a similar layout to the "Compare two panels" results table. In this case a user would paste in a list of genes into a text search box, this would then result in a table where the first column was the list of genes entered, then every subsequent column would be each of the panels where at least one of the genes entered was included. In the cell for each of these columns would be the gene if it was included and the color.
Genes Entered | Panel Name 1 | Panel Name 2 | Panel Name 3 |
---|---|---|---|
GENE_A | GENE_A | - | GENE_A |
GENE_B | GENE_B | GENE_B | - |
GENE_C | - | - | GENE_C |
GENE_D | - | - | - |
GENE_E | GENE_E | GENE_E | GENE_E |
If this approach is too complex then simply listing the genes entered and then listing the panels where the gene was included could be an option. You could color code the panel names to represent the highest confidence occurrence of that gene.
Genes Entered | Panels |
---|---|
GENE_A | Panel Name 1 , Panel Name 3 |
GENE_B | Panel Name 1, Panel Name 2 |
GENE_C | Panel Name 3 |
GENE_D | - |
GENE_E | Panel Name 1, Panel Name 2, Panel Name 3 |
There may also be value in allowing the user to determine which color genes to display so as to exclude the red genes if necessary.
