- session->id can return null when not logged in
- preg_replace can return null in case of error
- file_get_contents can return false
- activeSubpage has special null handling in twig menu

RegionControl: restore previous behavior, accessing sendMail could cause a PHP error in some cases, now that it has a type

the possible null values from session->id are not ideal here,
because the code is not yet checking for them properly

let's hope this doesn't break other stuff
