A few years ago I created a git mirror of bzip2 at https://github.com/nemequ/bzip2 which includes a history as best I could reconstruct it. It might be nice to have this repo be based on that data instead just the import of 1.0.6.
Unfortunately I'm not aware of a way to do this without annoying people already relying on this repo, so I'm not sure if you'll want to do it even this early on for this repo, and obviously this gets worse as time goes on.
If you want to see what it could look like: https://gitlab.com/nemequ/bzip2. All I did was something like
git remote add historical https://github.com/nemequ/bzip2 git pull git replace --graft 72ece1146d6de1d2e6d2bb2cc96a1c3c0f307d7b 67d818584d505503c2bdbd15aec43e6219642762 git filter-branch
I can't really open a PR since it rewrites the history; you would have to temporarily remove the protection on the master branch then do a forced push. Anyone updating an existing copy of this repo would need to do a hard reset once, but future checkouts would of course be fine.
I'm very happy to see someone maintaining bzip2 again, thank you!
