Unable to find corresponding source for, e.g., 2048 puzzle game version 1.8.

(I'm only using 2048 Puzzle Game as an example -- this problem may exist with other apps as well.)

On Android 4.4.4 (Kernel version 3.4.0-gd59db4e android-build@vpbs1.mtv.corp.google.com #1 (closed) Mon Mar 17 15:15:36 PDT 2014, Build number KTU84P) on an absolutely stock Nexus 5, using F-Droid client app version 0.66:

If I open the F-Droid app and browse to the "2048" puzzle game by Gabriele Cirulli (which I do not have installed), the installation candidate offered is "Version 1.8", which says "Added on 3/30/2014" and "source 493 KiB".

If I want to find the corresponding source for that before installing, I can't (at least not easily). There is no path in the F-Droid client app UI: even though the installation candidate screen tells me the size of the source code, clicking on that area just offers to install the app -- it doesn't give me further information about the source code. So next I look on the web site, and I can pretty quickly get to

https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=com.uberspot.a2048

but the only information there is for versions 1.95, 1.91, and 1.90. That page also says "For full details and additional technical information, see this application's page on the F-Droid wiki." and links to

https://f-droid.org/wiki/page/com.uberspot.a2048

So I went there, and I see that that page lists more versions, including 1.8. However, the page gives no information about the actual corresponding source. The entry for 1.8 is similar to the other version entries on that page, and just says:

1.8 This version is built and signed by F-Droid, and guaranteed to correspond to the source tarball published with it. Version code: 9

I.e., there is no link nor pointer to that published source tarball -- there is only the claim of correspondence. (Also it's not clear what the "Version code" means, or whether/how it relates to the "1.8" earlier.)

So if I wanted to discover the corresponding source to the v1.8 installable app before installing the app on my phone, there is no way to do it (as far as I can tell, though I could certainly be missing something).

Possible solutions:

Aside from giving (or at least linking to) the complete history on the app's page in the web catalogue, the on-device F-Droid app could offer metadata information about the build, including where to find the corresponding source. Also, giving the actual fingerprint (e.g., commit ID) of the tree in the app's source repository that was built would be an unambiguous way to identify the snapshot. This would not depend on version number metadata remaining mappable to a given tarball. Of course it's useful to give the version number and the downloadable tarball too, but the commit ID is something people can just enter into a search engine to find a copy of that code anywhere on the Net.

Thoughts? Happy to take this to forums if that would be more appropriate.
