Generate error page for non-F-Droid apps
This is a feature request, not a bug.
People are frequently being asked to install potentially insecure and untrustworthy apps for all kinds of different purposes.
It would be very useful to have a screen that appears on their phone showing the word "Security Alert" in red letters and the icon for a particular app from the Play store.
Example / Use case: your bank, Acme Bank, asks you to install their OTP app for secure logins but the source code is not available so it is not in F-Droid. You go in to the bank, open the F-Droid client, type the name of their app. F-Droid fetches details about their app from the Play Store, including the name and logo and then displays a screen like this:
Security Alert
( Logo )
App name: Secure Login
Publisher: Acme Bank
For security reasons, this app can't be installed.
Please contact the publisher and ask them to submit it for independent review by F-Droid.
The user would show this screen to the staff in the bank who may well send a complaint to their IT department. The user could also print a screenshot and send it directly to the complaints department of whatever organization they are dealing with.
This won't help in every situation, but if lots of people have it and it is really convenient to open the error page then it will help to raise awareness about security. For example, some bank staff may even be curious and want to use F-Droid on their own phones, even if their employer doesn't take any interest.
Another potential outcome is that even if organizations don't submit their apps to F-Droid, at least they will realize that not every customer can depend on their apps and they will have to offer alternatives to their apps.
It would also be useful to have automatically generated warning pages on the f-droid.org web site for every app in the Play Store that doesn't exist in F-Droid.
