F-Droid seemingly not being able to download and update in the background anymore

Device OS and version: Android 16
Device model/manufacturer: Google Pixel 7
F-Droid version (in the About screen): 1.23.1
F-Droid privileged extension version (if installed): none

What did you do? (clear steps if possible)

Press on the download button in the Updates tab for an pending update
Put F-Droid to the background by pressing the home button

What did you expect to see?

Download getting finished, and update proceeding in the background

What did you see instead?

The notification disappears after some seconds. When going back into the app, I have to restart the download from 0 again
