Redesigning the F-Droid website
I made https://forum.f-droid.org/t/is-this-f-droid-website-redesign-worth-developing/33795 earlier. To solidify F-Droid's role in offering alternatives to closed profit-driven apps, I think it would benefit from a fresh new look that is more welcoming towards a general audience. I'm interested in helping, but have limited time to contribute.
Some questions I have:
- Are you open to a redesign of the app store website? Not just applying different colors, but also moving things around and potentially emphasizing different things to better serve a more general audience while still catering to power users (like most of us currently using F-Droid probably are).
- Are you open to changes to the technology stack? The screenshotted prototype was created in SvelteKit, which I quite like. I currently have it configured as a static site generator, so it can be served by a simple Apache/Nginx. SvelteKit can be configured to not produce any client-side JavaScript, provided you don't want any of the benefits of single-page applications (faster page-to-page navigations, mostly) and JavaScript (e.g. a scrollable Netflix-style shelf of screenshots for an app). I have some experience with Jekyll but I feel like it impedes my productivity.
- What is your stance on AI assistance in building this? I personally don't want to work on a vibecoded codebase. I pride myself on understanding any code I submit and making sure it meets my quality standards. I am open to some amount of AI assistance, provided that other contributors feel comfortable with it, that it doesn't cause licensing issues and that it's actually a net productivity gain for the dev team.
