Request: documentation for how to install f-droid

The website just has a download link but no further instructions. I'm a reasonably competent software developer on Linux yet I have no idea how to proceed safely without accidentally allowing installation of any untrusted apk; I can only imagine it's even more confusing for general users.

Even just a few paragraphs on the website about how to install f-droid on a typical Android device would be very helpful. Thanks!
