set up fiscal sponsorship: The Commons Conservancy
F-Droid needs a legal entity to represent it, like any big free software project. @CiaranG can no longer run F-Droid Limited, and we have better options than running a legal entity ourselves. We have talked with Michiel of NLnet briefly and it seems that The Commons Conservancy would be a good fit for F-Droid since it is founded and run by technical people and the philosophy seems to match. It is also based in the EU and Euro Zone, where it seems the majority of the core contributors are. We looked at some US-based options, but that would seem to create a lot more accounting and paperwork, and there are no core contributors based in the US as far as I know. We could also consider an organization that is in any other country where a core contributor lives, and that contributor is willing to do handle the local side of the paperwork.
@andrew-gitlab has graciously offered to help F-Droid with this project. Help with setting up the fiscal sponsorship would be most appreciated!
I have reached out twice about joining The Commons Conservancy but haven't gotten a response. I have talked with Moritz about Center for the Cultivation of Technology and vaguely remember that he thought The Commons Conservancy would be a better fit. But since they haven't responded, perhaps it makes sense to ask Center for the Cultivation of Technology again.
