Mozilla Speed Dating grant payout and further work
I've subimitted an expense to opencollective for my work on the mozilla speed dating grant: https://opencollective.com/f-droid/expenses/25902
The grant was over $10.000 and covering basically everything that makes fdroid update apps faster.
This covers my work during the last few months on fdroidserver tasks, including:
- Checkupdates migration away from Ciarans infrastructure
- implementing apksigner signing, thus supporting targetsdk 30 apps for Android 11
- Nitrokey signing support and import functionality of an existing java keystore for replacing the fdroid signing infrastructure (ongoing work here: fdroidserver!783 (closed))
- and a huge chunk of work on improving ndk version handling (WiP here: fdroidserver!783 (closed))
@eighthave @uniqx please someone click on approve there in opencollective.
Future work
As can be seen in the linked MRs, they are close but not quite done. I'd like to continue this work funded by the opencollective donations in the following month with the main goal still being: make fdroid updates more reliable and faster. This includes finishing the NDK work for the buildserver, a followup to use the same technique for gradle versions as well and tackling the signing system migration away from Ciaran (which would by far be the biggest chunk here).
After the payout, there'll be about $2000 left, which won't cover a lot of dev-work hours. So I'd additionally like to lay out these goals in a blog post and specifically ask for donations for this project.
I'd like to try getting another $10.000 in the opencollective account (this can be set as a nicely visible goal there) to cover basically part II of this project. It would be interesting to see how well that donation drive will go. I think that by being transparent about what that money will be used for we might be able to reach this goal in a reasonable amount of time.
