Weekly-Updates: developing a process to generate 'em
Description
-
Current State: we have said we will give out updates, but we rarely get around to doing them, so the stuff to be reported on piles up and becomes harder to remember...
-
Expected State: Awesome, crisp updates posted at the conclusion of each week (usually on a Friday) to the fathom blog and quickly gobbled up by growing community eager to follow, learn and participate in all that is Fathomable.
Motivation and Context
Weekly updates have functioned like a stand-up delivered to the outside world, announcing highlights and the general contours of the week that was. Past updates have covered areas like progress with authoring smart contracts, the piecing together of the whitepaper, the launch of new repositories, and the evolution of our codebase. Updates have been a mixture of high level views and close-ups that delve into various code minutae. As well, there have been mentions of the Book Club and live events such as conferences that members of Fathom have presented at. Finally, there have been previews and ponderings of future undertakings that we are planning, such as The Playground.
Possible Implementation
One approach that might make this format feasible and sustainable would be for the updater to glance over issues and merge requests that have consumed our time and energy over the week, suss out common themes, and generate a weekly narrative from that. This approach should become more of a possibility as we refine our workflow and create meaningful labels, milestones, and other markers -- along with other procedures -- and learn how to use them all more fluidly.
Other Info
Hmmmmm. A component of this that is maybe more inward-facing, but worth mentioning, is that we'd like to generate data about page-visits to fathom.network and get a sense of how people move around the site. This sort of info may help us get a better sense of how people are exploring fathom, its elements, and ideas. And it may also help us curate weekly updates that connect with the interests and curiosities of our community.
Assign Collaborators
@djudjuu @jaredpereira @joelamouche how do we update weekly and not weakly?
Also, please add any other ideas, links, resources, etc. (e.g., In the "Other Info" section I only included one idea, which I appropriated from Julius and then riffed on).
Disclaimer: This form is a work in progress. We aim to shape it into a "form" that will be of maximum utility.
