Research interviews with code school students/graduates
We want to learn what motivates people to learn to code.
Brendan Asselstine (who has taught at Lighthouse Labs in Vancouver) mentioned that it's mostly:
- People looking for a career shift, followed by
- Existing developers looking to update their skills, and then
- People who are just curious and want to learn for the sake of it.
This shouldn't seem surprising, considering that developer jobs pay well above national averages in most countries, tech has a lot of narrative mindshare right now (startups! make millions! silicon valley!), and the perks and benefits are well documented (unlimited vacation policies, stocked offices with free meals, etc. etc.)
We should follow up by reaching out to existing learners or recent grads to confirm how accurate this is.
Some of the things we'd want to learn:
- What was their primary motivation for enrolling?
- Did they graduate feeling they were ready to achieve their goal(s) i.e. to get employed, work on a personal project/startup, etc.
- Did they have any major challenges during the program? What were they?
- Did they get enough support during the program from the teachers?
- Was there anything more they wanted out of the program?
- How was the post-graduation support? What did it comprise of? Was it helpful in achieving the learner's goals?
Who can we reach out to?
- @mhibino
- Denison (@alexsingh's friend)
- The boot camp grads that @joelamouche put us in contact with
..Who else?
