Chrome nightlies unuseable due to non numerical version number

How to reproduce

1. Download any chrome nightly build from here e.g. this.
2. Unpack & Load as unpacked extension in chrome

Observed behavior

The following error message is shown:

Required value 'version' is missing or invalid. It must be between 1-4 dot-separated integers each between 0 and 65536.
Could not load manifest.

Expected behavior

The extension should be loaded successfully.
