Using the ioctl interface

I would like to use some functionality the ethercat tool provides in my application (e.g. the nice network statistics that ethercat master shows). I'm not sure if it is intented to use the ioctl interface in my user space program. Is it discouraged? It seems to me, that the necessary definitions of EC_IOCTL_* macros and ec_ioctl_* structs are not in ecrt.h or any other file that is installed on make install. Is there a way to "install" the ioctl header?
