Basic time-lapse functionality should be added, since this is one of the two most common reasons to control a DSLR via an external computer (the other being stop motion animation, which is related).
For the most basic time-lapse functionality, one simply needs to implement the ability to take photos at a fixed interval, specified in seconds or in h:m:s form.
To add slightly more sophistication, a start time and end time could be specified.
There should probably be several warnings:
When the computer is running on battery power, remind the user that the battery may die during the time-lapse series.
When the camera's battery is not optimal, inform the user that the camera battery may die.
When there is not enough free disk space to store all of the images that will be taken.
Taking things to the next level, more advanced techniques like High-Dynamic-Range time-lapse could be implemented. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time-lapse_photography#High-Dynamic-Range_.28HDR.29_Time-lapse)
