Jesse (Linux Engineer)
Intro
Hi! I'm Jesse. 33 years old, he/him, and a resident of Austin for the last 8.5 years or so. My education is in Political Science, so I don't have any academic technical background. My experience is entirely practical.
I'm a Linux Engineer. I have mostly worked in support, but I have some experience with platform engineering, SRE, automation, IaC, and such things.
I joined DSA because I have been leaning more and more in a Socialist direction for the past 5 years or so, have become unashamed of the label, and want to participate in making our society a fairer one.
What I know
My technical foundation is in Linux. These days, I work mostly with Openstack, Saltstack, and Puppet. I use Puppet and Saltstack on personal projects to build out my web hosting platform and a 3d printer automation platform.
I think that I have a great familiarity with monitoring technology and it's one of my key skills, in my opinion.
Here is a list of software that I feel comfortable with:
- Saltstack (!!)
- Puppet (!!)
- Openstack
- Bash
- Python
- Nagios/NRPE
- Icinga2 (!)
- Grafana (!!)
- InfluxDB
- Collectd
- Telegraf (!!)
- OpenVPN
- iptables
- NTP (!)
- Nginx
- Apache
- Haproxy
- PHP-FPM
- Postfix
- OpenLDAP (!)
- Consul (!)
- Rundeck (!!!!)
- Bind
- PowerDNS
- dnsmasq
- Apache Guacamole
- Peertube (!)
What I want to know
Right now, I'm still learning more and more about Saltstack and Puppet, and learning how to optimize Icinga2 (it's my monitoring system of choice). I'm excited to use the knowledge I have now to build out large, well monitored platforms with easy-to-use automations, with lots of users.
I'd like to eventually make more use of container technologies like Nomad and Kubernetes, but right now my skills for those technologies are not there as much as they need to be.
Personal projects of note
I wrote a saltstack repository that can deploy and manage a peertube instance: https://github.com/prannonpendragas/simple_peertube
I also wrote a saltstack repository that can deploy and manage a 3d Printer Automation platform that I call Compunaut: https://github.com/compunautics/compunaut
Neither are well documented, but I refer to these often for some pre-written python and saltstack code to manage various technologies.
