Settings trouble, checking updates over Orbot (Galaxy Nexus, maguro)

Today a new update was available. Device is running Orbot set to VPN all applications. Preference in System Updates settings: "Perform requests over Tor" was set to ON, assuming it might be necessary. All other Update Preferences were OFF except "Mobile data warning". Tapping "Check" circle/button eventually gave something like "unable to check" each time.

Changing "Perform requests over Tor" to OFF gave expected results: July 23, 2020 version displayed as available update for download, and download came over Orbot/Tor.

Maybe there is a way to check the settings to avoid conflicts with Orbot status, or maybe this is a user education issue and can be closed without changes.
