Summary

Implement WHATWG URL Standard compatibility mode.

Background

Web browsers follow the WHATWG URL Standard which differs from RFC 3986 in several ways. This provides compatibility for web-focused use cases.

Requirements

  • WHATWG parsing mode option
  • Handle browser-specific URL quirks
  • Support for blob: URLs
  • Support for javascript: URLs
  • Special scheme handling (file, ftp, http, https, ws, wss)
  • Host parsing per WHATWG (IDNA, special IP handling)

Differences from RFC 3986

  • Backslash normalization to forward slash
  • Tab/newline stripping
  • Special port defaults
  • Host parsing rules

Acceptance Criteria

  • Pass WHATWG URL test suite
  • Clear documentation of differences
  • Option to select parsing mode
