As a Crossref member I want a way to indicate that a publication was self-funded

As a Crossref member I want a way to indicate that a publication was self-funded.

What

A member contacted us asking how they could indicate that certain articles were self-funded as an <assertion> in <fr:program> metadata. I explained this was not currently possible, but it seemed like a good idea, so I wanted to document it for consideration in future schema versions.

Why

Because funding data is not required, and is not supplied for all items, the absence of funding data doesn't imply the absence of funding. So, when publishers collect funding data, including instances when research is explicitly self-funded, there would need to be a way to indicate that explicitly, not just by omission.
