Articles can specify funder name funder DOI, Grant ID, and then might all mismatch

Where?

  • The funder element of the Article schema
  • The funding element of the Grant schema

What's the situation?

The identity of a funder for an article can be expressed as:

  1. The article funder name
  2. The article funder DOI
  3. The article's linked Grant's funder's name
  4. The article's linked Grant's funder's DOI

They might contain two different DOIs and two different spellings of the funder.

What does it make more difficult?

It can be very hard to actually answer questions like "find articles funded by Wellcome".

How can we improve it?

  1. More restrictive schema normalization to prevent conflicting data.
  2. Search API denormalization to make searching more permissive.
  3. Periodic automatic quality checks.
  4. Periodic automatic quality improvement suggestions.
