Snapshot backup style, as an alternative to normal backups

Problem Statement

Backups can take up a very large amount of space on your system. Allowing a snapshot style alternative can dramatically improve space efficiency for backups.

Who will benefit?

Everyone.

Benefits and risks

What benefits does this bring?
    - Drastic reduction in space usage, allowing for user's to retain more backup data.

What risks might this introduce?
    - User confusion
    - Database overhead
    - Increased backup time

Proposed solution

Implementing an alternative backup style, using a snapshot type approach.

Examples

I cannot remember if MCSS had this feature, but I've used other wrappers that would track which files were changed and only backup the modified files, which is effectively a snapshot with less intelligence.

Priority/Severity

  • High (This will bring a huge increase in performance/productivity/usability)
  • Medium (This will bring a good increase in performance/productivity/usability)
  • Low (anything else e.g., trivial, minor improvements)
