COVID-19 Ranking
Describe your idea. Due to lack of resources and availability of hospital space, there necessitates a program to determine or rank the individuals that are at the most risk or individuals that need the most medical attention using machine learning and patient information from datasets. In a way, it will be predicting the progression of coronavirus within an individual based on a certain amount of variables to determine how critical their status will be and match them to which hospitals are available. After the progression of the illness is determined, hospitals would then receive the information and distribute care according to necessity. By creating an objective method for determining who is more at risk for a severe onset of this illness, I can eliminate the biases in medical treatment and allocate medical beds to those who are projected to need it the most.
Which of the four categories for submissions does this address? Reduce spread of virus.
What kind of backing would this kind of project need in addition to what's already being provided? This project would require hospital backing to actually implement this ranking system to provide optimal care for those who need it the most. And, professionals who are experienced in machine learning.
What are open questions you need help with? How to develop a machine learning project of this magnitude? What other variables should I consider?
Planned Architecture (if you know this) I plan to consider age, gender, race, underlying symptoms, symptoms, and exposure as my variables when I am creating the machine learning program that will triage the patient and determine their risk. From there, I will collect the data of availability in nearby hospitals and direct them there.
Matlab will probably be the ideal program for this project.
Data requirements For this project, patient data, especially those whose results are already known, are necessary to determine trends found within the data regarding severity of progression.
Hospital information regarding availability.
Short description of the benefits The purpose of this project would be to efficiently and effectively allocate the resources to those who will be most affected by COVID-19. In doing so, the individuals who need treatment the most will be prioritized. Finally, since the program is objective, the program can alleviate the bias that is very prevalent in medicine. This is a rather novel idea as well since machine learning triage systems for coronavirus are yet to be available and I will be considering race and potentially other socioeconomic components that are often overlooked when considering the effects of diseases.
