need __version__

Please provide the following

• Machine and OS: Ubuntu Linux 22.04
• binary_c: branch: commit:eaf31f47c
• binary_c-python: branch: commit:1a03f758

Could the population object have a __version__ as seems to be standard in python modules? There may be one I just couldn't find it.
