Download never succeeds

Upon launching the app, I am prompted to download the general world map. It never succeeds - I always get 'Download failed. Touch to try again.'

v8.1.0-2-Google from F-Droid, on a Moto G 5s Plus, Android v7.1.1. All other network-dependent apps are working just fine, and Maps has all (Location and Storage) permissions.
