Garbled text during first-time login

Students using MacOS X 10.15 or newer have reported garbled text when trying to use the plugin for the first time:

I have tested the plugin with my 2012 iMac, which uses MacOS X 10.14.6, and it does not show the garbled text.

It appears to be linked to this OpenJFX issue:

The issue has been resolved in OpenJFX 14, and the fix should be therefore included in the latest LTS release of OpenJFX (OpenJFX 17). We should upgrade the plugin to use that version, and test that it's still compatible with Java 11 JDKs.
