The lowercase a conundrum

The lowercase letter "a" exists in two different forms, the double-storey one, or "roman" one, most commonly found in English and Western territories, and the single-storey one, or "script" one, most commonly found in cursive handwriting and closer to its Eastern Cyrillic counterpart. See the attached image.
