Ask creators of famous, now abandoned old games if their sources can be released under an open source license

There is a habit of releasing the source code of old computer games. But maybe more can be done if one hunts down and asks systematically the copyright holders. One example of where one could do it would be https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight_Lore.

Idea: Compile list of famous, old games. Remove those that are open source already. Hunt down the copyright holders of the remaining games. Ask them for an open source release. Quite simple, eh.
