The main difference between Electron and NW.js is the approach to starting the application.
With NW.js it assumes that you want to create a desktop app, so it is set up for smart defaults. All it needs is
{
"name": "your_app_name",
"main": "index.html"
}
From that it will create a Window and point it to your main
file or url.
With Electron it assumes you are writing a node script, that might have a UI of some kind. You have to write a bunch of boilerplate to describe the window, it's size, and what to do when someone clicks the "X" on the window. By default the window just hides and the process has to be killed from the task manager.
With NW.js everything just works as you would expect out of the box. If you want to override that, so you have a tray icon app instead of a windowed app, you can do that, or to hide the window when you click the "X" instead of closing it you can set that up. But it assumes that what people do 99% of the time should be the default, and if you want to do something different, then you write the extra code. Where as Electron has no smart defaults, you have to do a lot more boiler-plating and write the extra code every time.
It's just a difference in philosophy with their approach. NW.js is a browser with Node built in. Electron is a Node module with an optional UI.

You might want to consider NW.js over Electron. For one, it isn't directly tied to GitHub, but besides that, it has a lot of technical advantages:
