Vanilla/MGE XE style indoor actor shadows (or some kind of better indoor shadows)
In Vanilla Morrowind and MGE XE, each actor (potentially up to a cap depending on settings) casts a shadow from one (or more if a setting has been changed) light source. This makes usually more believable shadows than the current implementation and produces fewer situations where shadows are cast through walls and floors. The gist of the system is:
- For each actor, pick the most significant light.
- Tightly aim a depth camera at them from the light's point of view.
- Render only the actor to that shadow map.
- Use that shadow map when rendering the main view.
The original implementation had the limitation that shadows darkened things by a fixed amount that didn't depend on the light casting the shadow, which makes things easier, but ideally this would be avoided and look more realistic.
