Normal Map Crashes with Starwind Assets in TES3MP and OpenMW
If you're reporting an issue specific to a fork, e.g. TES3MP for multiplayer or OpenMW-VR for OpenXR VR, please report it to that fork's author instead of here.
If you're reporting an issue specific to an open merge request, the comments for the merge request are probably a good place to report.
Describe the issue as detailed as you can. Below is a list of questions that should be answered in the description (if they apply).
- Is the problem OpenMW specific or does it also happen in vanilla Morrowind?
- Starwind doesn't work in Vanilla, but, the issue does occur more often in tes3mp.
- What is your operating system?
- Most affected clients are using Windows, I use EndeavourOS and the issue doesn't appear to happen in Linux builds but I haven't tested extensively.
- What version of OpenMW are you using? If you used a bleeding edge build, state the exact revision used.
- In openmw 0.49 (will gather revision) we managed to solve some crashes by destroying assets. Most clients are using
- What version of Morrowind are you using (i.e. retail CD or Steam)? What addons (Tribunal, Bloodmoon) do you have installed? What language is your Morrowind install?
- 1 GOG install, 3 steam installs
- Do you use any mods? If so, does the problem also occur in a clean vanilla install without any mods?
- Starwind, Normal Maps for everything. Vanilla does not have normal maps so the issue cannot be present.
- What are the exact steps to reproduce the problem?
- Look at the
buildtall1.nif
ingame. In tes3mp, it will crash instantly. - We generated multiple sets of normal maps for the entire mod using multiple tools (normalmap, NormalMapGenerator, leigter) and found this issue to be very consistent with some specific textures.
- We also confirmed it by enabling and disabling normal maps in the client settings.
- I personally was not able to reproduce the crash in openmw 0.47, although other players reported crashes with 0.47 and 0.49.
- Look at the
- What did you expect to happen? What happened instead?
- It definitely shouldn't crash.
- Are there any error messages in your
openmw.log
file?- Not that appear to be explicitly related to the crashes. There are lots of error messages regarding
out of bounds uv
s on meshes but none for this particular mesh. There are other combinations of normals/meshes which cause crashes we haven't identified.
- Not that appear to be explicitly related to the crashes. There are lots of error messages regarding
- Where is the in-game location this problem can be observed? Avoid vague statements such as "west of town X". Instead, open the console (
`
key by default, the key above Tab), click on the problematic object, then use the betacomment (bc
) instruction to get useful information about the object that you can copy and paste into the bugreport: There is a building using this mesh with a blue whale head on it, look at the mesh and cause the crash. The mesh/normal map combination seems to cause crashes regardless of what cell it is present in. if installing starwind, the refid of the static matches the name of the mesh.
