All that pointer arithmetic hard to follow and error prone.  Then
using snprintf() to do a simple copy lost all the speed anyway.

replace a bunch of convoluted pointer stuff.

Replace a bunch of pointer arithmetic with strlc**().

Remove more pointer madness.
