Remove legacy Windows port code. · 8c930a7a
      Eric S. Raymond authored
We might support Windows again someday, but the intelligent way to do it will
be via a C99/POSIX emulation environment such as CYGWIN or the Windows 10
facility for executing Linux binaries that is being demonstrated by Microsoft
(though not yet shipped) at time of writing.

      More magic-address banishment. · 74f5f267
      Eric S. Raymond authored
This commit is a bit of a grab-bag. First, it adds a build option
--enable-classic-mode that can be used to prevent the new behaviors
the rest of the patch implements.

Then, it modifies some logging functions so that the
clock-identification fields in them become composed from the driver
shortname string and the unit number, rather than being a 127.127.t.u
address. The --enable-classic-mode option *restores* the old behavior.

Finally, it modifies the documentation to reflect the new behavior.

Conversion of the Mills HTML docs to asciidoc lands with this commit. · db95da79
      Eric S. Raymond authored
The intent is (a) to make these easier to maintain, and (b) to have just one
master format for all in-tree documentation. The latter is not yet completely
accomplished, as various manual pages in the source directories are not
      yet converted.

The conversion resembles the ancestral HTML pretty closely, using an
adaptation of Dave Mills's stylesheets to retain his look. The
content has been verified to match by two reviewers. The sppearance
is very similar, though not identical; asciidoc doesn't allow quite as
much freedom in image placement as raw HTML, and table boxes don't
look quite the same. The look of the command.txt and footer.txt
      includes isn't completely right either.
