klte - LineageOS 16.0 - Default messaging app does not trigger notification light

Expected Behavior

  1. Inbound SMS or MMS received
  2. Device alerts user with sound and/or vibration
  3. Notification light pulses until notification is addressed by user This is the behaviour seen in LineageOS 15.1.

Current Behavior

  1. Inbound SMS or MMS received
  2. Device alerts user with sound or vibration
  3. Notification light is not activated

Possible Solution

I have tested my device and found that the current behaviour occurs:

  • with the default settings at Settings> Apps & Notifications> Notifications> Notification light
  • even when the messaging app is explicitly added as a custom value (Settings> Apps & Notifications> Notifications> Notification light> Advanced> Use custom values [ON]> +> Messaging)

The notification light works as expected when charging and with calendar notifications, etc. It's just the default messaging app that fails to trigger the notification light regardless of user setting. Logcat is attached.

I'm not able to test with alternative messaging apps so unsure whether issue is limited to default messaging app.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Receive SMS or MMS
  2. Hope that you are either carrying the device or can hear it, otherwise..
  3. Remain oblivious to message notifications unless screen is turned on
