LineageOS 17.1+16.0 - Device d855 - boot loop after phone encryption

After fresh install, I enabled lock pattern and encryption. Device reboots.

Expected Behavior

Device displays LG logo, boots (lineage animation), asks for pattern, starts up correctly.

Current Behavior

Device displays LG logo for some seconds, blacks out and starts again (loop).

Possible Solution

Steps to Reproduce

Start with TWRP 3.3.1:

  1. Wipe > Format
  2. Wipe > Advanced > System, Caches
  3. Install LineageOS and reboot
  4. Finish first boot wizard + add screen lock pattern
  5. From Settings > Security > Encryption & credentials > Encrypt phone, activate encryption

/device d855 /version lineage-17.1 /date 2020-04-18 /kernel 3.4.113-Lineage-ge9173c6 /baseband 2.0.1.c1.13.2-00002-M8974AAAAANPZM-1 /mods None

I have read the directions

This applies to 17.1 but it can also be reproduced with latest 16.0 release from 2020-04-04.

As I encrypted my phone before without a problem. Either something broke my device or this bug has been introduced after I previously applied encryption.

Here there are some additional reproductions / related symptoms:

1. I have been running LineageOS 16.0 on my LG d855 with encryption. After upgrading to 17.1 I will be prompted to unlock encryption but my previously correct code will not do the trick.

2. After a fresh install of 17.1, enabling encryption will result in a boot loop. I see the LG logo for some time, then black, then LG logo again and so on.

3. After formatting and wiping, then reinstalling 16.0 it behaves like (2).

4. After formatting and wiping, I restore my previously working encrypted 16.0 backup and it will, again, end in a boot loop like with (2).
