Double entries in browser history

Is it possible to intercept the request and rewrite it without leaving a history entry?

I get two history entries every time a url is rewrite. Example clicking the imdb logo that go to homepage adds to history: https://www.imdb.com/?ref_=nv_home and the new https://www.imdb.com/
