- menu function or keyboard "G" (for group) groups contact by current sort order
- each group can be individually collapsed/expanded (see image above and below)
- drag&drop contact(s) or group(s) onto another group inserts the dragged contacts into the target group, thereby updating their data. Example: Drag 5 contacts into a company to make them employees of this company. (see image below)
- Clicking on a column header changes the sort order (but not the grouping). This is required for different sorting/grouping.

Contacts can be grouped by sort order as requested in 2007 in bug #405959: group contacts by sort order. Thunderbird does this already for emails (via keyboard "G" or via menu view > sort order > grouped by sort). The same should be adopted for Thunderbird's address book.

To group contacts by a field NOT sorted by, the user could first press "G" (group by sort) as described above and then choose a different sort order (which is kind of a workaround). Or the user can open a window in which advanced viewing settings can be defined (see images below). This is the method used in Outlook.
